I love the story of Sleeping Beauty because it was my first “big girl” book. The book had tonnes of pictures, but also had lots of big words that my six year old did not know even existed. It was an A4 sized hardcover book, with roses and thorns intertwined; the castle in which she slept in the background.
Sleeping Beauty marked my love for books. I remember sitting with that book and pretending to read the words I did not understand. I remember looking at the words “sewing spindle” and tried to figure out what a ‘sewing’ was and what ‘spindle’ had to do with it. I watched my mothers face as she tried to explain how a woman can stay young even when she slept for 100 years. My little mind trying to figure out if magic was good or bad because love is strong, but even her parents love couldn’t wake her up.
The book was a learning curve and the birth of my love affair with writing.
